captured by KHWD on my canon, one of my fave cameras ever BUT notice the ethereal light it captured, no idea where that came from...????

Burghley house's weird painted ceiling, what's it all about?

The painted ceiling at Burghley House, particularly the Hell Staircase painted by Antonio Verrio, is quite fascinating!

Verrio was a renowned Baroque artist who worked on many grand houses in England. The ceiling of the Hell Staircase depicts the mouth of Hell as an enormous gaping cat's mouth, with countless tormented souls within. It's a dramatic and intense piece, meant to evoke a sense of darkness and despair.

In contrast, the Heaven Room directly connected to this staircase features lighter, more colorful murals depicting scenes from ancient mythology, including Mars and Venus caught in an adulterous liaison.

These contrasting rooms were designed to create a powerful emotional journey for visitors, moving from the horrors of Hell to the splendor of Heaven. It's a unique and thought-provoking example of Baroque art and storytelling.
