Statue of the Marquess of Londonderry, Durham

Charles William Vane Tempest Stewart was the third Marquess of Londonderry. He died in 1854, and his widow commissioned the statue later that year. Londonderry was a soldier, and he fought in many famous battles, so the statue, unveiled in 1861, shows him on a horse and wearing a military uniform.

According to local legend, the sculptor was so proud of his creation that he boasted it was flawless... and later committed suicide after a blind beggar ran his hands over the statue and discovered that the horse has no tongue! However, similar tales are told of equestrian statues elsewhere.

This is a belated follow-up to this shot...

This time, the Marquess isn't hiding his face...

...but, unfortunately, the horse's dangly bits are even more on show! :-)
