St. Andrew's Church and Hopper Mausoleum, Shotley

            A Georgian church standing in an isolated position at the top of Grey Mare Hill near Consett, St. Andrew's is a cruciform church built in 1769 to replace a much older church on the site. The Georgian building suffered from subsidence due to the collapse of mine workings under the hill, and had to be rebuilt in 1892. In its grounds stands the fantastic domed structure of the Hopper Mausoleum, erected in 1752, with obelisks above and statues in carved niches on the sides.

The church itself appears to be in an excellent state of repair but, owing to its isolated location and the considerably overgrown state of its grounds, I assumed the church was disused and didn't try to enter, so no interior shots. Maybe next time!

UPDATE: I paid a return visit on 29 October 2014 and, perhaps not surprisingly, found the church to be locked.
