The Upstairs Hall Night Light - a photo on Flickriver

To manage the need for some very young overnight guests’ concern over lack of a night light in an unfamiliar set of surroundings, we dug out a moving tropical fish lamp and set it up in the upstairs hall to provide some light for them without subjecting the adults to a blinding light experience during a late night bathroom trip. The trouble is that as nice as the colours were, once again the dynamic range to be captured was way out of the capabilities of my camera gear. Hence, a multiple exposure HDR image (with an additional frame for the moving fish) were needed. I think this pretty accurately captures the feel of the corner where the lamp was placed. This image is intended as a companion to the image of the sunbeam hitting a counter corner in the bathroom (www.flickr.com/photos/jwvraets/51255980144/in/dateposted/ ). The full description is a tad to messy to get into so here is a very much simplified description of how this was done:

Three images at 2-stop intervals around a base exposure were taken using a tripod-mounted Nikon D800 fitted with an AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm 1:4.0 lense set to 55mm, ISO100, Matrix metering, Daylight WB, Aperture Priority mode, f/7.1, three bracketed exposures with the intent to use these frames for HDR processing around a reference frame at 1 second. In addition, because the fish lamp was constantly moving, a separate frame was needed to stop the movement, taken at ISO400 and 1/30 sec with the intent to merge the lamp area only into the finished HDR image. The three frames (JPEG format) were then loaded into free Open Source Luminance HDR and a pair of images were produced, one using the Mantiuk’06 model and the other the Fattal model. The two images were loaded into GIMP as layers and then blended to get a hybrid of Mantiuk’s details and Fattal’s colours while getting a good low level of noise. The result what then processed (saturation, curves, contrast, etc) to get the final look seen here. Then, the image in which the fish lamp motion was stopped was added as a layer and, using masks, after some PP, the fish lamp area only was added/merged into the HDR image. The final image was scaled to 6000px wide, sharpened, saved, added fine black-and-white frame, added bar and text on left,, sharpened slightly, saved, scaled image to 3000 px wide for posting online, sharpened very slightly, saved.
