Hostas – After The Frost - a photo on Flickriver

            I have been using my Olympus OM-D EM5 primarily as a pocket camera generally set up to do fully automatic shooting. The camera does that very well. But having used a full frame DSLR (Nikon D800) for about a year now and getting used to that level of output quality, I wanted to know what I could get out of the EM5. The night before this was taken the first killing frost of the season hit us in Grimsby, Ontario and the hostas were hit. They went from nicely fanned out leaves gracefully arching out over that part of the garden, to limp leaves and stems broken under the weight of their own leaves by morning. So, to take advantage of the opportunity, out came the tripod and the EM5. I took this shot intending to convert it to black-and-white in RAWTherapee but to do the rest of the PP in GIMP with a view to trying to emulate the way Lightroom Mobile handles tone adjustments, primarily at the dark end of the tone curve. Came out not too bad at all. And, being monochrome as well as Monday, this is posted as a Monochrome Monday image. - JW

Taken using a tripod-mounted Olympus OM-D EM-5 fitted with an Olympus M Zuiko 14-42mm EZ 1:3.5-5.6 lens set to 42mm, Aperture priority mode, Daylight WB, ISO200, f/5.6, 1/60 sec. PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Olympus RAW/ORF source file: set final image size to be 8000px wide, convert to black-and-white with some gamma adjustment of the green and red channels to darken the image, slightly boost contrast using the L-A-B tools, slightly boost black level save (i.e. minimal processing with NO sharpening). PP in free Open Source GIMP: make some minor adjustments to the tone curve (mainly a boost in contrast of the dark end of the curve and a slight reduction in the brighter end of the curve), a little overall contrast and brightness adjustment using the contrast/brightness tool, sharpen, save, add fine black-and-white frame, add bar and text on left, save, scale image to 3000 high for posting online, sharpen slightly, save.
