Pantheon and Obelisk - a photo on Flickriver

            View of the upper part of the Pantheon and the Obelisk that stands in the Piazza della Rotonda.

The inscription just below the pediment of the Pantheon reads "M AGRIPPA L F COS TERTIVM FECIT", a shortening of "M(arcus) AGRIPPA L(ucii) F(ilius) CO(n)S(ul) TERTIVM FECIT", or "Marcus Agrippa,  Lucius' Son, Consul Three Times, Built This".  This 'labeling' is not quite correct.

The original building was built by Marcus Agrippa around 27 AD and was dedicated to 'all the gods' (pan theon).  That building burnt down in 110 AD.  The current building with a 'Greek' style columned front portico and a 'Roman' style rotunda was actually built by order of the Emperor Hadrian between 120-128 AD.  

After a period of disuse, the building was restored as a church in 609 AD dedicated to Sancta Maria ad Martyes (Saint Mary and the Martyrs).  At almost 2,000 years old, this is the best preserved large ancient Roman building.

Also visible here is the red marble Obelisk that tops the Fontana del Pantheon.  The obelisk dates to the 13th Century BC and was taken from the Temple of Ra in Heliopolis, Egypt.
