China Alley Memorial Detail 1 - a photo on Flickriver

            A closer look at the right side of the China Alley Memorial Mural. 

The 50 feet long and 10 feet high mural was painted in 2004 by husband and wife artists Qi Pang and Guo Song Yun.  It stands near a fountain at the west end of Figueroa Plaza. A Chinese community had formed here in the 1860s.

On the mural are depicted some of the people of Sui Mon Gong (as China Town was called by its residents), at work and at prayer. A Taoist Temple was a central feature of the area.

On the right side here, can be identified four members of the Chinese Fire Company with warning gong and fire hose cart.  The association was established in the 1870s and served both China Alley and the rest of Ventura.  Many buildings in town were wooden and fire was a serious risk.

An article in the Ventura Free Press in March 1903 voiced support of funding for the group:
“The Chinese Fire Company is peculiar to Ventura and a valuable adjunct. By its promptness always, it has saved 1000’s of dollars worth of property and it would not be a bad idea to give it a benefit so it could have a new complete outfit. Its maintenance has never cost the town a cent.”
