Room of Constantine - Donation of Rome

The Donation of Rome was the only large wall fresco that could be viewed when I visited the Room of Constantine. Plastic screens on both sides made the room quite dark, and blocked access to the rest of the room for conservation work.

This is one of the four rooms of the Stanze di Raffaello, in the Apostolic Palace. The room takes its name from the Emperor Constantine and was used for receptions and official ceremonies.

Constantine was born pagan and later became the first Christian emperor. On the walls are frescoes of events from his life which also depict the triumph of the Christianity over pagan beliefs. In this painting, the Emperor Constantine presents a golden statue, representing Rome, to Pope Sylvester witnessed by a crowd of civic, religious and ordinary people. The setting depicted is the original Basilica of St Peter.

This legendary event was later used to justify the temporal power of the Popes, when they were both leaders of the Catholic faith and rulers of the Papal States.

The inscription on the column at far left "Iam Tandem Christun Libere Pro Fiteri Licet" translates roughly as: It is now lawful for any person to admit he is Christian

The Room of Constantine was the first of the Four 'Raphael Rooms' I visited. They were largely decorated by the students of the School of Raphael based on designs and drawings by the Raphael who died before the work was completed.

The Raphael Room frescoes and the Sistine Chapel ceiling frescoes by Michelangelo together form the grand fresco sequences that were one of the highlights of the High Renaissance in Rome.
