Doge Francesco Dandolo and Wife Presented to the Virgin (1339)

            On the lunette in the upper half of the monument to Doge Francesco Dandolo is a painting by Paolo Veneziano (dated circa 1339).   It depicts the Doge and his wife being presented to the Virgin Mary and Infant Jesus by Saints Francis and Elizabeth of Hungary.  St. Elizabeth was a patroness of the Secular Order of Franciscans.

Paolo Veneziano, also known as Paolo da Venezia, is said to be 'the most important Venetian painter of the 14th century' and an early painter of the Venetian style.

The sarcophagus below was once covered entirely in gold. 
 On its front is a carved a relief depicting the Passing of Mary.  
 The apostles surround Mary, they are flanked by the Evangelists Mark and John.

This monument is the only one remaining of what had once many monuments in the chapter house.
