Horn / Hoorn / Corne - a photo on Flickriver

Keratin is the material that makes up hooves and the outer layer of horns. Horn had been processed like wood for centuries, but softened it could also be pressed into shapes.
This box (lid and bottom) was pressed from pieces of horn in the first half of the nineteenth century.
If it is not too thick, horn can transmit light.
My nail in the picture is also keratin.

Keratine is het materiaal waaruit hoeven en de buitenste laag van hoorns bestaat. Hoorn werd al eeuwen bewerkt zoals hout, maar week gemaakt kon het ook in vormen geperst worden.
Dit doosje (deksel en onderkant) is in de eerste helft van de negentiende eeuw geperst van stukken hoorn .
Als het niet te dik is kan hoorn licht doorlaten.
Mijn nagel op de foto is ook keratine.
