Teresa at Thistlegorm - a photo on Flickriver

One of the two Stanier 8F steam engines, this one is to starboard. They were initially placed on the deck but the explosion projected them in the air, one to each side, and they sunk upright (the wheels are more dense than the boiler).

The SS Thistlegorm was a single screw merchant ship 128m long launched in 1940 and used in the war effort as a cargo ship. While carrying a load of varied equipment (motorbikes, plane parts, trucks, two steam locomotives, loads of ammunition, etc) at the first hours of the 6th of October of 1941, two german Heinkel He-111 airplanes found it anchored near the Sinai Peninsula while the ship waited for the clearance of the Suez Canal (obstructed due to a collision). The two bombs hit the nº4 hold which carried most of the ammunition and the ship sank quickly. The rest of the cargo stayed pretty much in the same place as the rest of the ship suffered little damage. It's a very interesting wreck with a very interesting history. By far, some of the best dives I've made.
