A Crooked Tree

            As we started our climb out from under the Cut River Bridge, we found this tree forming sort of a gateway over the trail.

Or "trail," you might say. It was (is) not being maintained and is quite ragged. Near here we met a woman who'd climbed to the top of the trail, found that it ended, and returned to the bottom of the gorge. It seemed that, like us, she remembered there'd once been a park on the west end of the bridge; since that park is gone, she apparently didn't know what to do at the top of the gorge. The trail, she reported, sort of trickled to an end. So she gave up and climbed back down.

We were confident, regardless of the state of old trail, that we could cross the gorge using the Cut River Bridge. So we continued our climb, ignoring her advice to just return to the park on the east side.

Turned out we were right. Well, she was right that the trail just kind of ended, but making our way to the highway and crossing over the bridge was not difficult. So that's what we did.

We met the lady again on the other side, of course. We didn't gloat.
