Communication

While printing a photo from one of our first "studio" sessions from 1971 when M was 19-20, this one in daytime with window light allowing the the use of finer grain film. We were experimenting with abstract nude images and this photo was taken after I had climbed up onto a desk to try a different viewpoint. I originally caught it as a semi-abstract composition of limbs, without her face visible but I wasn't sure how to arrange it so I included all of her – I'm pleased I did as looking at the scan again recently I realised the full frame made an interesting portrait which I posted recently on my Patreon site and one of the members suggested the face would make an interesting portrait by itself.

As often happens, her spontaneous position as she sat up after a shot of her lying on the carpet, made a nicer composition than any I could have thought out – I asked her to stop mid-movement to take this photo. In the full frame version, her look up at me "OK go for it if it works..." I think expresses the enthusiastic intense collaboration involved in these sessions. I took another more relaxed portrait after this as we were deciding how to set up the next picture.

Tech. note: despite the slower film (Ilford FP4) this is stll rather grainy as it is a selective enlargement of only about ⅛ of the frame.
