Greeting the ocean Ⓟ - a photo on Flickriver

This is one of my favourite photos of Marie, from the Winspit Cave series in late summer, 1971 - here she has climbed up from the bottom of the cave to the opening on the side of a cliff overlooking an expanse of sea and shouts back to me something like "Wow, this is amazing" as she moves into the hot mid-day sun from the cool of the interior. I think her spontaneous pose expresses the feeling brilliantly...

You can get an idea of the climb with this photo from below – and she did it bare-foot !

Unfortunately I only had my wide-angle lens with me at that point so the original version showed a lot of cave and not much Marie but the quality of the Canon R/F 28mm F2.8 lens makes this selective enlargement possible. The magnified view shows the image is as sharp as the grain of the HP5 film (you can pick out individual grass stems) - not bad for a W/A lens that was already 10 years old in 1971 !

Tech. note: this is a very early example of HDR processing: the film was developed in Paterson Acuspecial with limited agitation which resulted in reduced contrast except at edges so effectively applying a chemical "high pass spatial filter". When printed on high contrast paper this resulted in enhanced edge resolution while maintaining a wide tonal range (she was in direct sunlight and the inside of the cave was quite dark) - no digital filter works quite as well.
