Ten years ago today at 12:51pm a shallow (6km deep) 6.34 magnitude earthquake struck near the city.  185 people died that day when buildings collapsed (a few were killed by rock falls on the hill suburbs).  

Several special events were held, the main one being at the "earthquake memorial wall" beside the River Avon in the city, but several communities along the river and in other parts of the city held special remembrance services,  Our local one was just down the road from where we are living and across the river from what is now red-zoned land in Bexley (where our house was at the time).  After speeches, a song, and a minutes silence a lone piper played a lament before all those there threw flowers into the river.  They headed upstream towards the city on the incoming tide, while those thrown in, in the city headed downstream as it it past the tidal influence area.
