            A sight that most tourists miss when visiting Ireland and the Cliffs of Moher, the view from the North Atlantic at Doolin Beach looking up. Equally amazing!

On several days while visiting England, Scotland and Ireland we had 40-50+ mile per hour winds…this was one of them. This photo looks so blue due to the moisture and sea foam in the air. Saltwater and camera gear do not play well together so I had to set the camera up, swing around and snap the shot.

It was interesting to see how the weather that develops off the west coast of Africa, crosses the Atlantic then runs up the eastern seaboard of the United States, including tropical storms and hurricanes only to later impact the Emerald Isle. Here is a bit of Irish hurricane history:

The worst storm to hit Ireland is called the Night of the big storm in 1839. A category 3 hurricane with 115 mph winds. More than 300 died with tens of thousands homeless. It was the worst storm to hit Ireland in over 300 years.

Hurricane Ophelia in 2017 had 119 mph winds, the highest wind speed ever recorded in Ireland. More than 400,00 homes lost power but they were blessed to only lose 3 souls.

Hurricane Katia in 2011 had 80 mph winds and ripped apart the set of Game of Thrones in Northern Ireland. Several crew members were injured.

Storm Darwin in 2014 recorded Ireland highest waves ever at 82 feet! It also caused 215,000 homes to lose power and uprooted an estimated 7.5 million trees.

I never realized that the same hurricanes that ravage the US can hit Ireland at hurricane strength as well. We are often just grateful that the bully has moved on, not considering that it may not have concluded its wrath.
