Friedrichshain es una parte del distrito berlinés de Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. Creado en 1920, fue un distrito autónomo de Berlín, está ubicado en la zona este de la ciudad.​ En 2001, por medio de una reforma administrativa fue fusionado con el vecino distrito de Kreuzberg. Su nombre deriva del parque verde de Volkspark Friedrichshain; ubicado en la zona norte del antiguo distrito de Friedrichshain. 
Después de la caída del Muro de Berlín en noviembre de 1989 y la reunificación alemana, Friedrichshain comenzó a desarrollar una reputación de distrito joven y dinámico, en parte gracias a las bajas rentas y los muchos apartamentos vacíos, que atrajeron la atención de nuevos ocupantes originarios de Berlín Occidental.​

Junto a los vecinos distritos de Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg, Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain es considerada una de las zonas más populares de Berlín, y es el hogar de muchas creaciones y numerosas empresas de medios como MTV Europa Central. Es conocido por sus numerosos bares, clubes, pubs y cafés, concentrados en las inmediaciones de Simon-Dach-Strasse y Boxhagener Platz. Hay numerosos okupas en Friedrichshain, en particular en Rigaer Straße. Friedrichshain is a part of the Berlin district of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. Created in 1920, it was an autonomous district of Berlin, located in the eastern part of the city.In 2001, through an administrative reform it was merged with the neighboring district of Kreuzberg. Its name derives from the green park of Volkspark Friedrichshain; located in the northern area of ​​the former Friedrichshain district.
After the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989 and the German reunification, Friedrichshain began to develop a reputation for a young and dynamic district, partly thanks to low rents and many empty apartments, which attracted the attention of new original occupants from West Berlin.

Next to the neighboring districts of Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg, Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain is considered one of the most popular areas of Berlin, and is home to many creations and numerous media companies such as MTV Central Europe. It is known for its many bars, clubs, pubs and cafes, concentrated in the immediate vicinity of Simon-Dach-Strasse and Boxhagener Platz. There are numerous squats in Friedrichshain, particularly in Rigaer Straße. In contrast to the most boring and expensive districts of Prenzlauer Berg and Mitte, Friedrichshain has a bad atmosphere, and its very low rents after German reunification attracted students and artists. Currently, numerous restoration works are underway and Friedrichshain is developing at a fast and increasingly gentrified pace.
