El Museo Antiguo (Altes Museum ) fue construido entre 1823 y 1830 según los diseños de Karl Friedrich Schinkel y es uno de los edificios más significativos del clasicismo. Con una forma exterior claramente estructurada y una estructura interior precisa basada en la antigüedad griega, Schinkel llevó a cabo la idea de Humboldt de abrir un museo como centro de enseñanza para el público.
Los elementos arquitectónicos que se han conservado hasta las construcciones señoriales son el orden monumental de las 18 columnas iónicas acanaladas, el pórtico amplio, la rotunda (un recurso expresivo del panteón romano) y por último la escalinata. El edificio se quemó entre 1943 y 1945 y fue gravemente dañado. Su reconstrucción duró hasta el año 1966.

Originariamente fue diseñado para exponer colecciones de arte berlinesas, desde 1904 el Altes Museum alberga la colección de antigüedades con una exposición permanente de arte y cultura de los griegos, etruscos y romanos.

The Old Museum (Altes Museum) was built between 1823 and 1830 according to the designs of Karl Friedrich Schinkel and is one of the most significant buildings of classicism. With a clearly structured exterior shape and precise interior structure based on Greek antiquity, Schinkel carried out Humboldt's idea of opening a museum as a center of education for the public.
The architectural elements that have been preserved until the stately constructions are the monumental order of the 18 corrugated ionic columns, the wide portico, the rotunda (an expressive resource of the Roman pantheon) and finally the staircase. The building burned between 1943 and 1945 and was severely damaged. Its reconstruction lasted until the year 1966.

Originally designed to exhibit Berlin art collections, since 1904 the Altes Museum houses the collection of antiques with a permanent exhibition of art and culture of the Greeks, Etruscans and Romans.
