Abandoned Dock Storage 2619 A - a photo on Flickriver

            Abandoned dock storehouse in Cathlamet, Washington in Wahkiakium County on the Columbia River.

Historic and beautiful Cathlamet, population 538, was the largest Native American settlement on the lower Columbia River when Europeans first explored the area in the 1700s.   Lewis and Clark stopped and traded here, and the first white settlers, a former Hudson Bay employee, his half-Native American wife and their 10 children, arrived in 1846.  

For a time, Cathlamet had the largest salmon canneries on the Columbia River.  Five hundred Chinese worked here as fish cleaners.  The town is and was isolated, and the first doctor did not practice in the area until the 1920s.

Today, Cathlamet still has an active dock for tugboats and fishing and also has a number of beautiful old buildings.   The last active ferry across the lower Columbia to Oregon is about three miles from town.   Cathlamet is the only incorporated town in the county.

There are also many bald eagles in the area.  There were three in trees within 100 yards of me when I shot this photo.   Can’t wait to get back here and shoot some more photos.
