Nighty-Night

The polar bear, Pike, a female San Francisco native, was eating her mid-day meal when we arrived at her enclosure, and she was quite busy devouring the tasty repast. After eating the dessert, which looked like a sweet potato, she went to the bubbling fountain, drank and washed her face, then laid down near the pond for a little nap. The zoo designers made the fence about 6 inches too high, so I had to stand on tiptoe to compose an image that did not include the rail. Short people would be out of luck. They should supply a few footstools or small ladders for photographers to get the shot.

Pike (pronounced PEE-KA), a female polar bear cub born at the Zoo in 1982, has exceeded her normal lifespan in the wild, which would have been 20-25 years. There is supposed to be another one, Ula, but we never saw her.

My friend Tony cloned out a bit of blue plastic bucket that was in the water near the polar bear's head; I was too unsure of my PS skills to try it. Tony said he used the "content aware" feature of CS5. Check out Tony's stream; he has an amazing variety and skill at both photography and processing.
