Der Silberreiher (Ardea alba, Syn.: Casmerodius albus, Egretta alba) gehört zur Familie der Reiher aus der Ordnung der Schreitvögel (Ciconiiformes). Es werden vier Unterarten unterschieden.

Die Art hat ein sehr großes Verbreitungsgebiet, das weite Teile Ost- und Südeuropas, Nord-, Mittel- und Südamerika, Asien und Afrikas umfasst. In Mitteleuropa ist der Silberreiher ein lokal verbreiteter und häufiger Brut- und Jahresvogel. Die Art zeigt eine ausgeprägte Neigung zu Wanderungen und wird in zunehmender Zahl auch in den Regionen Mitteleuropas beobachtet, in der sie kein Brutvogel ist.

Aussehen

Der Silberreiher ist ein großer, weißer Reiher mit gelbem Schnabel und dunklen Beinen und Füßen. Seine Länge beträgt 85 bis 100 Zentimeter, die Flügelspannweite beträgt 145 bis 170 Zentimeter und das Gewicht 1 bis 1,5 Kilogramm.

Anders als andere Reiherarten der Gattungen Ardea und Egretta weist der Silberreiher keine Schmuckfedern am Hinterkopf auf. Er bildet stattdessen zur Brutzeit lange, lockere Schulterfedern aus, die lange Seitenäste haben. Während der Balz werden diese radförmig gespreizt. Die Nominatform Ardea alba alba hat dunkel grünlichgraue oder schwarze Beine, die Iris ist gelb und der Schnabel zur Brutzeit schwarz mit einer gelben Basis. Außerhalb der Brutzeit ist der Schnabel gelb bis orange-gelb. Viele Individuen haben eine dunklere Schnabelspitze. Der nackte Zügel und der Orbitalring sind außerhalb der Brutzeit grünlich-gelb und während der Brutzeit hell smaragdgrün.

The great egret (Ardea alba), also known as the common egret, large egret, or (in the Old World) great white egret[2] or great white heron[3][4][5] is a large, widely distributed egret, with four subspecies found in Asia, Africa, the Americas, and southern Europe. Distributed across most of the tropical and warmer temperate regions of the world, it builds tree nests in colonies close to water.

Systematics and taxonomy
Like all egrets, it is a member of the heron family, Ardeidae. Traditionally classified with the storks in the Ciconiiformes, the Ardeidae are closer relatives of pelicans and belong in the Pelecaniformes, instead. The great egret—unlike the typical egrets—does not belong to the genus Egretta, but together with the great herons is today placed in Ardea. In the past, however, it was sometimes placed in Egretta or separated in a monotypic genus Casmerodius.

The Old World population is often referred to as the "great white egret". This species is sometimes confused with the great white heron of the Caribbean, which is a white morph of the closely related great blue heron.

The scientific name comes from Latin ardea, "heron", and alba, "white".
