Yosemite Valley Elm in Yellow - a photo on Flickriver

This elm tree peaked in color on a Wednesday and into Thursday, and was already in decline when I captured it again 2-3 days later on Saturday. Fortunately the Valley as a whole has enough variation in tree health and different tree species to have a broad color peak overall.

The Yosemite Conservancy describes the history behind this tree:
"This famous tree in Cook’s Meadow is the last of a group of elms planted by James Mason Hutchings in the mid-1800s. While most elms and other non-native tree species have been removed from the area, this individual remains. The now historic tree, whose leafy contour calls to mind the shape of Half Dome, is a true icon of the Valley floor and a favorite subject among photographers."
