Imani - a photo on Flickriver

Imani

I noticed her inside the university Communications Centre building on a snowy winter day. I first noticed her attractive braids and approached her just as she was settling onto a bench in a hallway to do some studying. I could tell that she would make an excellent portrait subject so I introduced myself and my Human Family photo project and invited her to participate. She liked the sound of the project and agreed but mentioned that she had a mid-term exam in a couple of hours so it needed to be brief. Understandable and understood. Meet Imani.

As I got my camera out and shed my coat I asked the origin of her pretty name. She told me it is Swahili from Kenya. When I asked if her family was from Kenya she explained they are not. Both parents are from the Caribbean islands.

I asked Imani to stand in the middle of the corridor in a spot where natural light was coming in through a set of ceiling to floor windows and took the photos. Imani was very helpful and followed the minimal direction I gave her to make sure the light was good and that she was looking into my camera lens.

I learned that she is 18 and is in the Creative Industries program which combines artistic and business courses and gives students the skills to launch business careers of a creative type. Her own interest is fashion. She is from Toronto and her message to the world is “Enjoy the moment.”

It would have been interesting to chat further and learn more about her interests and goals but it was clear that she had studying to do for her exam so we exchanged contact information and I thanked her, wishing her luck with her mid-term. In turn, she wished me success with my project.
