Horsetails streaming - a photo on Flickriver

            I had wildflowers on my mind as I entered Capitol Reef National Park. I was approaching Cathedral Valley from the east when I was distracted by this line of cliffs and the cirrus above them. I had been told, when I was a kid, that those clouds were horsetails, so that is the name that jumps into my mind when I first see them.

The soft material that makes up these hills and cliffs is bentonite clay, I believe. It erodes so quickly that few plants can tolerate it, and because it is derived from volcanic ash, the soft soil is not nurturing for plants. But the colors are either fascinating or menacing, depending with your experience on dirt roads that pass over bentonite clay.
