Day Care for Elk

            Elk (Cervus canadensis) were widely distributed along the river in Moraine Park, but the calves stuck together, close to a cluster of adult females. They already seemed to have individual identities. A few were diffident while others were rambunctious, running about. Sparring broke out repeatedly, as in the right side of the frame, but it was ritualistic fighting, so no blows were struck.  

Cows usually deliver two calves in early summer, and like white tailed deer and mule deer, the calves have white spots on their sides, presumably for camouflage.
