20222 Seafield

            Haymarket depot's 20222 sits in the arrival sidings at Seafield pit on the south side of Kirkcaldy with an assorted rake of engineers stock.

Seafield was a relatively new pit for the Fife coalfield, opened in 1960, with a forecast life of 150 years. In 1973 disaster struck when a roof collapse killed 5 men. Like many pits, it was badly affected by the 1984 miners strike; when it emerged, the damage extended not only to production capacity but also to working relations. 

Production at main face stopped in February 1985, 3 days after the nearby Frances pit ceased production with the last day of coal production being January 22nd 1988. Complete closure followed in March with demolition of the distinctive winding towers in September 1989.

Seafield box was opened in 1963 and reduced to ground frame status when control switched to Edinburgh signalling centre as part of the Burntisland resignalling in October 1979. It latterly controlled the connection to the 3 arrival lines and crossover
until closure in 1989. The rail operations here were notable for their use of triple class 20s. IIRC by the date of the image any coal produced was transported away by road.

The water beyond is, of course, the Forth estuary with the once heavily fortified island of Inchkeith prominent.
