Sharp or Unsharp (1b) - a photo on Flickriver

            I usually favour a sharp picture. Unsharpness is usually associated with some error, such as poor focus, camera shake, poor optics, etc. etc. 

Yet, is there no room for an unsharp image in modern photography, isn't it legitimate to express how something feels rather than how something looks like?

A while back I came across the notorious Summarit 1.5/50, a lens suffering from a strong double personality syndrome: at f/8 it is needle sharp, at f/1.5 ~ f/2.0 it suffers from immense field curvature aberration. Just for the fun of it, I decided to try it at both ends. To my surprise the results gave me mixed feelings.

Both pictures 1a and 1b were taken at the same location with the very same Summarit 1.5/50, even though with different cameras, on different days, under different weather conditions and framed differently. Yet the results obtained robbed me of the conviction that a photograph must be sharp. Maybe all that a photograph needs is to be a photograph.
