"Last Man Standing" - a photo on Flickriver

            As this leaf hangs on for a few more hours, the bud promises good things to come in the Spring.  I think about the adaptations that deciduous trees and shrubs have had to make to live here in the semi-north.  The tissues of these leaves could not survive the freezing temperatures, so the trees and shrubs just drop them, grow new leaf buds that are protected from the cold, and wait till next Spring.

In the Spring this serviceberry shrub will burst into bloom, be visited by pollinators, leaf out, form berries, cedar waxwings and robins will eat the red berries, and the leaves will produce food that can be stored in the roots, stems, and trunks.  

This is the fun of photography and nature---everywhere you look there is a story.

I made this image with my Pentax K5(soon to be K3) and my Pentax 18-135mm lens.  Processing was with Aperture 3 and PS CS5.
