The Awakening

Jave, Alan, and I have recently returned from a photo boot camp in the Pacific Northwest focusing on the Columbia River Gorge. Although we missed the unexpectedly early blooms of balsam roots, we thoroughly enjoyed hiking to various waterfalls, wading through freezing water, and battling spray to get our shots. At the request of Commander Jave, we had burgers every day to keep us burgered out for the next few months.

Day 3: Proxy Falls. Located in the Three Sisters Wilderness and a several hour drive from our hotel, Proxy Falls was definitely worth a visit. Literally, this waterfall was a beast, both in terms of size and difficulty to shoot.

Knowing we had to get to the falls early, Jave, Alan, and I hauled ourselves out of bed at 5am. We knew we wanted to shoot the waterfall in the morning light. The sheer size and the multiple veins of flow were simply breathtaking. However, the intense mist began to bombard us over 100 feet away from the base. The closer to the falls, the more the mist felt like a rain shower. Shooting this waterfall was quite challenging battling the mist and constantly wiping the front of our lens. On top of that, Proxy Falls is fed by snowmelt and the 40 degree water was numbing our feet. Despite these challenges, we forged on and established a routine of wipe-shoot-cover to fire off our shots.

As the midday sun approached, I waited for the right time when the sun would center itself over the scene and burst through the branches to produce a sun star. To my surprise, not only did I get a sun star but the overhead sun also created light beams through the mist and spray. I captured multiple frames of various shaped beams but ultimately liked this shot where the beams were more focused and ray-like.
