Reflection Flats

It has been five years since I have come across such great conditions near the local “death valley” spot over in Alviso. With multiple heat waves and hotter than normal temperatures from the end of summer through the beginning of fall, certain areas became parched revealing some hidden treasures beneath. This area first started off as salt ponds with a few pools here and there but gradually more and more water evaporated leaving behind an enormous salt flat that resembled a flooded Badwater.

Despite a windy and risky forecast for light I decided to take a gamble and make my way over to these flats for sunset. There was not any burning sunset light but instead I witnessed some dramatic conditions with ever changing low cloud formations. For a while a band of sunlight illuminated the mountains. The water level was also at the lowest I had seen here with salt ridges peeking above the water. In many ways the shoot felt bittersweet, reminding me of my early days of landscape photography and coming out here to find a treasure trove of landscapes ranging from mud cracks to salt flats.
