About a month ago I embarked on a 6-day southwest tour photographing and chasing the monsoonal light with Aaron, David, and Phill. We had quite the adventure witnessing crazy light, blowing out car tires, scrambling down steep slopes, and getting eaten alive by mosquitoes. Despite the hindrances and scorching heat, I had a great time exploring new areas and seeing formations where few have ventured.

First, big thanks to David for taking us to this sick spot and giving me processing tips on this shot. Located at the northern end of the Painted Desert, this location dubbed “Breezyland” is full of layered badlands remnant from the Triassic Chinle formation. During midday, these hills appear boring and lacking color but as soon as the sun sets, soft light striking the hills illuminate the colorful bands across the hills with a soft glow.

On our last evening, Aaron and I opted to hit up this spot for a second time. This time, a cloud swath moved into position just in time for sunset and we were treated to a beautiful wave-like cloud exploding over the banded hills. I hope you enjoy :)
