The Bend

I did not expect to find myself out at Horseshoe Bend. On my first visit here nearly 3 years ago, I was fortunate to encounter and full blown monsoonal apocalypse at this spot. However, Alan insisted on getting a Horseshoe Bend shot as he was not pleased with his previous attempts.

Having spent most of the day exploring slot canyons, I was pretty beat and the thought of a nice easy stroll for sunset sounded quite good. The sky appeared to get increasingly cloudy as the day progressed but there was always hope a gap would form along the western horizon.

Once we arrived, we encountered the expected: throngs of tourists and a small group of photographers waiting for sunset. The scene was still just as breathtaking as I recalled during my first visit with sheer cliffs of over 1,000feet straight down to the Colorado River. One thing I noticed was the low water level. Due to a dry winter, the water level was low enough to reveal a small island within the bend not present several years ago.

Sunset ended up being a decent showing. Though the clouds did not cover as much of the sky as I had hoped, it provided some intense burning color coupled with some texture in the clouds. All-in-all, an evening spent outdoors surely beats and evening sitting in a hotel room.
