Leading the Way

Over the New Year’s week, James and I headed to the Eastern Sierras for a 4-day photo boot camp. Our primary goal was to focus on Mono Lake and Alabama Hills. On Day 2, we noticed some high thin clouds rolling in towards the north around Mono Basin and decided to follow the clouds for potential sunset light.

Being the popular photographic location, I really wanted to look for a composition that was different at Mono Lake. While scouting, I noticed an S-curve shaped sand bar at the edge of the lake that led to a set of tufas. I scouted around the tufas for some time but ultimately felt the S-curve offered the best composition. On top of that, the water was perfectly still.

As sunset drew near, the high clouds began aligning above my envisioned framing. To get the composition I wanted, I had to step into the water. Luckily I was wearing waterproof boots up to several inches and was sufficient for where I needed to stand. I thought the lake bottom would be dense but I was greeted with soft mushy sand that seemingly sucked my feet in. The lake stench was almost unbearable and the ground felt awfully gross, but I maintained focus as the clouds lit up and reflected on the water. A great way to start off the New Year!
