Moonbow at Lower Yosemite Falls - a photo on Flickriver

            This a is moonbow (a rainbow lit by moonlight) from Lower Yosemite Falls. Moonbows are rare and only happen predictably at a few waterfall locations on earth. At Yosemite, it takes a nearly full moon, clear skies and big-time water flow in April, May and June. On our 2019 trip, we were fortunate to see moonbows in both the upper and lower falls.

But that's not all... In this photo, you'll also see a Lyrid Meteor right above the falls. The meteor shower was happening during our visit and I caught one in this frame. I may have had better frames of the waterfall but this one had the meteor. Wild!

You'll also notice the trees moving quite a bit. That isn't from wind, it's from the force of the water coming down over the falls. The falls were surging from winter ice melt. You can't tell since this is a long exposure but a very heavy mist was coming off the falls to those of us photographing it from the bridge. I pre-focused away from the bridge and could only capture two shots before moving away to dry the lens (I used a lens sleeve to protect my equipment). Awesome to see!

My photo from Yosemite's upper falls is 36 back in my feed. It was incredible as well to see from the meadow (and without any need to protect my equipment)!
