            For those who have never heard of Norfolk Island, a short history lesson.  As a result of the American War of Independence, Britain lost access to supplies of timber and flax for ship building.  On his second voyage of discovery in 1774, Captain James Cook reported that Norfolk Island was rich with flax and giant pines.  He named the island after Mary Howard, Duchess of Norfolk and claimed the remote and uninhabited volcanic outcrop for Britain.  

The first settlers, between 1788 and 1855, were British convicts and soldiers, and the island was infamous for its brutality as a penal settlement.  Some of you will have seen the various movies about the mutiny on the Bounty, it's a true story.

In 1856, the descendants of the Bounty mutineers came to Norfolk from Pitcairn Island.  Some later returned to Pitcairn, but many stayed on and their legacy remains strong, with Bounty descendants making up about one third of the island’s population of 1,800 people. 

The combination of convict history and continuing fascination for the Bounty story form the foundation for the island’s tourism industry.

Many early convict buildings and ruins still stand, with a conservation program in place since the 1960s to ensure the hardship those early inhabitants endured is not forgotten. Four public museums keep their stories alive.

While most of the Norfolk Island coast is rugged cliffs, there is one beach.  It's not a surf beach, but it is picturesque and safe as this shot suggests.  There will be another photo and more information tomorrow.
