Pebble Beach – Hardcore Tafoni! - a photo on Flickriver

            Just south of Pescadero, CA, is a small beach locally known as Pebble Beach.  Instead of sand it is covered with pebbles that have eroded out of poorly consolidated marine terrace sedimentary deposits in the face of the short bluff at the top of the beach.  

The turbidite deposits that surround and underlie the beach range in texture from fine siltstone to coarse sandstone.  

Many have tafoni weathering patterns that likely form when water repeatedly penetrates the porous rocks, dissolves tiny amounts of minerals that then are deposited at or near the surface of the rock when the water evaporates.  As this process continues inner parts of the rock weaken and a crust-like resistant outer layer forms.  Ultimately the inner part erodes away, sometimes helped by pebbles caught in the depression and tumbled about by the waves.
