Spring In Meteora, Greece #2 - a photo on Flickriver

            Red-flowered poppies are in full blossom in front of Meteora, Greece in May at sunrise. They belong to the species Papaver rhoeas. Golden beams of the rising sun are directly cast on the rock formations. There are few clouds in the sky.

The poppies’ scarlet colour is strongly reminiscent of the local non-combatants’ blood shed. This land was watered by the blood of hundreds of civilians assassinated by Nazi monsters during the operation “Panther” in October 1943. In the nearby Aspropotamos villages there were ladies who were too old for running (away, to save their lives): the Nazis locked them in their houses, then set them on fire and burned them alive! They opened fire on the younger women and children attempting to flee away. They burnt down local churches, too, as well as historic monasteries. At Distomo and elsewhere in Greece, the atrocious beasts even disemboweled pregnant women with their bayonets.

Poppies have been used as a symbol of eternal sleep or death; they often adorn tombstones. Poppies are worn to commemorate those who died in war; they also inspired John McCrae to write his poem “In Flanders Fields.” In Greek classical mythology the bright scarlet color signifies a promise of resurrection after death.

Meteora is a group of impressive and lofty rock formations. The sandstone megaliths’ height varies 1,000-1,800 ft (300-550 m). The rock masses were formed 60 million years ago, are geologically unique and listed in UNESCO world heritage sites.
