Last Judgement Day mosaic by Venetian artist Bianchi above entrance to Holy Cross Church in Pfeifer, Kansas. The church was built in 1915-1918 at a cost of $56,000. The church is sometimes referred to as the "two-cent" church due to each family charge two cents on every bushel of wheat sold. The church is laid out in a form of a cross. The sanctuary is the head, the transepts are the arms, and the nave is the body of the cross.

Due to World War I, stained glass was hard to find so the windows were frosted and the wall were not painted. In 1962 the interior was redecorated under the guidance of Father Emil Sinner.

On July 1, 1993 the Diocese of Salina dissolved the parish. The church and cemetery are kept under with funds from the Holy Cross Charities, Inc., a non-profit. In 2008 the church was named one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas Architecture by the Kansas Sampler Foundation.
