Pointe du Hoc - Normandy, France

Pointe du Hoc was a major target during the D-Day landings as it was believed to contain a German 155mm Coastal Battery able to fire on both Omaha and Utah beach. It is situated a couple of miles west of Omaha beach.

The task to take the fortified position was given to the U.S. 2nd Ranger Battalion.

in the early morning of june 6 1944 some 225 Rangers started to climb the steep cliffs of Point du Hoc. Against the odds they did manage to climb these 25 to 30 meter high cliffs under heavy fire and take the German positions.. only to find them without the guns! The Germans had removed them after heavy bombardments leading up to D-Day. More then a third of the Rangers were dead or wounded and the men still in fighting condition were surrounded by Germans determined to take back their positions.

The Rangers, however, did find the hidden guns concealed near their original positions and blew them up.

They then had to hold out for 2 more days fighting off several ferocious counter attacks. They were finally relieved by forces landed on Omaha in the afternoon of june 8.

On the photo: German gun emplacement bunker which was empty on D-Day. The guns had been removed.
