The Uffizi Gallery in Florence is one of the world’s greatest art museums with much more on display than “just” Renaissance art. Buying time-slot tickets in advance has always been sensible but became practically essential in time of social distancing. The numbers allowed inside the museum at any given time have always been strictly controlled so it never became the scrum of the Louvre in front of the most famous works but arriving early in the morning or visiting late afternoon when the museum has fewer groups is usually more pleasant. Even at busy times, groups move on fairly fast, and rather than getting frustrated by their presence, enjoy the free guided tours, which is particularly handy to visitors speaking several European languages.

In addition to the paintings, the Uffizi is home to many fine sculptures too but the most famous sculptures in Florence is in the Bargello (many by Donatello), the Accademia (Michelangelo’s David), and the Medici Chapel.
