Terschelling: Hoorn, sjouw - a photo on Flickriver

Next to the Sint Janskerk (Saint Johns church) you can see an old 'sjouw', a 'time ball' from the days farmers didn't have a watch. The sjouw was raised in the old days at 11.30 AM to indicate it was time for lunch. In the afternoon it was raised to indicate the time for milking the cows. 

De sjouw of 'tijdbal', is een gevlochten tenen bal die dagelijks om half 12 aan een mast gehesen werd om het werkvolk en de boeren te laten weten dat het middagpauze was. Ook de melktijd 's middags werd aangegeven. Hoorn is van oorsprong een agrarisch dorp waar vroeger veehouderij de voornaamste bron van inkomsten was.
