Hamburgs erstes Hochhaus: Der EMPORIO Tower ist mehr als 45 Jahre nach seiner Erbauung aus der Stadtsilhouette Hamburgs nicht mehr wegzudenken. Seine Grundrisstypologie, bestehend aus drei Gebäudeflügeln, die von einem dreieckigen Versorgungskern ausstrahlen, ist exemplarischer Ausdruck von Flexibilität und Reversibilität. Zwischen 1961 und 1964 von den Architekten Helmut Hentrich und Hubert Petschnigg als erstes Hochhaus Hamburgs für den Konzern Unilever errichtet, wurde das Gebäude 2001 von der Hansestadt Hamburg unter Denkmalschutz gestellt. Nach dem Auszug von Unilever im Jahr 2009 beauftragte die Union Investment Real Estate GmbH HPP Architekten mit der Kernsanierung. Eine Erhaltung der denkmalgeschützten Substanz bei gleichzeitiger Modernisierung in energetischer, bauphysikalischer, organisatorischer und technischer Hinsicht sollte das Haus fit für ein zweites Leben machen.

Hamburg’s first high-rise building: The EMPORIO Tower has become an integral part of Hamburg’s urban silhouette more than 45 years after its construction. Its floor plan typology, consisting of three building wings radiating from a triangular supply core, is an exemplary expression of flexibility and reversibility. Built between 1961 and 1964 by the architects Helmut Hentrich and Hubert Petschnigg as the first high-rise building in Hamburg for the Unilever Group, the building was designated a monument by the Hanseatic City of Hamburg in 2001. After the departure of Unilever in 2009, Union Investment Real Estate GmbH commissioned HPP Architekten with the core renovation. Preserving the listed substance with simultaneous modernization in terms of energy, building physics, organisational and technical aspects should make the house fit for a second life.
