Im Jahre 1988 wurde der U-Bahnhof München Ostbahnhof mit seiner luftigen und hellen Atmosphäre unter dem Orleansplatz nordwestlich des DB-Bahnhofs eröffnet. Er liegt an der aus der Innenstadt nach Neuperlach verlängerten U-Bahn-Linie U5. Im U-Bahnhof wechseln rote Emailblechverkleidungen mit weißen Paneelen ab und gliedern damit den Bahnsteig. Quer zur Fahrtrichtung wölben sich neun halbrunde Tonnendächer, in denen jeweils ein freihängendes Lichtband angebracht ist.
Die Art der Gestaltung wurde in keinem anderen Bahnhof verwendet und macht ihn daher zu einem Unikat.

In 1988, the Munich Ostbahnhof Underground Station with its airy and bright atmosphere was opened under Orleansplatz northwest of the DB station. It is located on the U5 subway line, which is extended from the city centre to Neuperlach. In the subway station, red enamel panels alternate with white panels and thus divide the platform. Across the direction of travel, nine semicircular barrel roofs, each with a free-hanging light strip, curve. The type of design was not used in any other station and therefore makes it unique.
