Der Berliner Fernsehturm ist mit 368 Metern das höchste Bauwerk Deutschlands sowie das vierthöchste freistehende Bauwerk Europas. Der Fernsehturm befindet sich am Bahnhof Alexanderplatz im Berliner Ortsteil Mitte. Er war im Jahr der Fertigstellung 1969 der zweithöchste Fernsehturm der Welt und zählt mit über einer Million Besuchern jährlich zu den zehn beliebtesten Sehenswürdigkeiten in Deutschland.
Der Fernsehturm im Internationalen Stil wurde von 1965 bis 1969 von der Deutschen Post der DDR in der historischen Mitte Berlins (Teil des Bezirks Mitte) auf einer Freifläche zwischen dem Marx-Engels-Forum (historisches Marienviertel) und dem Alexanderplatz errichtet. Am 3. Oktober 1969 erfolgte die Eröffnung. Das Bauwerk ist über 220 Meter höher als der alte Berliner Funkturm aus den 1920er Jahren im Westteil der Stadt. Als Wahrzeichen und weithin sichtbare Landmarke prägt es die Skyline der Stadt. In Eröffnungsszenen von Filmen mit Bezug zu Berlin wird die Hauptstadt neben Bauwerken wie dem Brandenburger Tor, der Siegessäule und dem Reichstagsgebäude häufig durch den Fernsehturm symbolisiert. The television tower is located at Alexanderplatz station in Berlin's Mitte district. The television tower in the international style was built from 1965 to 1969 by the Deutsche Post of the GDR in the historical centre of Berlin (part of the district centre) on an open area between the Marx-Engels-Forum (historic Marienviertel) and Alexanderplatz. It was opened on 3 October 1969. The building is over 220 meters higher than the old Berlin radio tower from the 1920s in the western part of the city.
