Wacky Races 😎 :) PH-CHB F-28 of NLM takes on 9K-ACN of Kuwait Airways for a race to the runway at London Heathrow!

Another poor quality ORWO photo!
I was using East European ORWO film which I experimented with for a short time in 1978-79. The film was really grainy but cheap!

This is the only shot I can think of where I captured two aircraft on parallel taxiways - both heading for a 28R departure at London Heathrow. NLM City Hopper Fokker F-28 PH-CHB appears to be racing Kuwait Airways Boeing 707 9K-ACN.

Over at the biz jet park, an interesting line up of four biz jets, two of which are executive airliners. I have a feeling that the 727 is HZ-TA1, and the DC-9 is certainly N112AK. Alongside is a pair of Gulfstream IIs.

PH-CHB 'Birmingham' c/n 11138 - Fokker F-28-4000 - one of four F-28 Fellowships delivered new to NLM City Hopper in 1979. The aircraft flew with NLM until the airline merged with KLM in 1990, and continued with KLM until 1996. The aircraft was then leased to Ostrava Air as OK-IEL, and Merpati Nusantara as PK-MSW, before ending up sold to Air Mauritanie as 5T-CLH in 1999. By the mid 2000s the aircraft was withdrawn from use.

9K-ACN 'Burghan' c/n 20547 Boeing 707-369C was delivered new to Kuwait Airways in Feb 1972. The aircraft flew with the airline for 12 years, before being sold to Alyemda (Yemen) as 7O-ACS. Twelve years later, it was sold again, to New ACS (Liberia) as EL-ALG and converted to a pure freighter. Re-registered EL-ACP, in 1998 the aircraft was to be sold again to Pacific Airlines (Chile), but the sale fell through and the aircraft remained stored at Santiago airport - fate unknown.

The original slide / transparency was rescued from a box of 'dud' slides that I could never quite bring myself to throw away - now I am glad that I kept them. ;)
