SP-LBB LOT Ilyushin Il-62M approaches runway 10R for departure at London Heathrow

The old order at London Heathrow It wasn’t long before both of these aircraft vanished from the scene - LOT started using Boeings and Pan Am vanished from the skies altogether!

Seen in some glorious spring sunshine, one of the later-build LOT Poland Polish Ilyushin Il-62M fleet taxies to the threshold of runway 10R at London Heathrow on scheduled flight LO282 to Warsaw, whilst a large-logo Pan Am Boeing 747 gets airborne in the distance.

SP-LBB c/n d1034152 'Ignacy Paderewski' - delivered new to LOT in February 1980 and flew with the airline until 1992 when it was sold to Aeroflot as CCCP-86132. After the break up of the Soviet Union, many of the Aeroflot fleet passed to the national airlines of the constituent countries, and this aircraft became UR-86132 with Air Ukraine. Retired in 1999 and only finally broken up at Kiev in 2007.

LOT Polskie Linie Lotnicze Il-62s - the airline operated one of the largest fleets of Il-62s in Europe - 16 aircraft between 1971 and 1992. Here is a list of the fleet:

SP-LAA Il-62 1972-1980 - w/o at Warsaw 14Mar80
SP-LAB Il-62 1972-1982 - sold to Aeroflot as CCCP-86706, then RA-86706 with Krasnoyarsk Airlines - wfu 17Dec97 as life-expired with reg cancelled the same date. Sat at soc 17dec97 as life-time expired and canx same date; sat wfu at KJA, without titles and prefix. Seen jun01/jan02; broken up, without titles and prefix, seen Jan02 broken up.
SP-LAC Il-62 1972-1982 - sold to the Soviet Air Force and overhauled by 243 ARZ at Tashkent. Noted in Soviet Air Force / Aeroflot scheme in 1992 as CCCP-86556. later RA-86556. Last known flying 2001 - wfu at Engels - later preserved in the long-range aviation museum at Engels from 08Aug00.
SP-LAD Il-62 1974-1983 - sold to Aeroflot as CCCP-86707, later RA-86706 with Krasnoyarsk Airlines - wfu as life-expired in 1998, and removed to the Krasnoyarsk Technical School. Last noted 20Jun06.
SP-LAE Il-62 1973-1984 - sold to Krasnoyarsk Airlines as CCCP-86708, then RA-86708 - wfu 17Sep02 as life-expired, reg cancelled 15Dec03. Moved to a lake near Krasnoyarsk, seen there in 2007, but broken up in late Jul08 - only cockpit and tail remained by 03Aug08.
SP-LAG Il-62 1977-1982 - sold to the Soviet Air Force and overhauled by 243 ARZ at Tashkent. Noted in Soviet Air Force / Aeroflot scheme in 1992 as CCCP-86557, later RA-86557. Last known flying Dec08 - wfu in the second half of 2010 as the life-time of the engines had expired. Sat wfu at Engels - later preserved in the base museum at Engels from 2012.

SP-LBB Il-62M 1980-1992 - sold to Air Ukraine as CCCP-86132, later UR-86132 - wfu 1999 and broken up at Kiev by 2007.
SP-LBC Il-62M 1980-1992 - sold to Air Ukraine as CCCP-86582, later UR-86582 - wfu 1999 and broken up at Kiev by 2008.
SP-LBD Il-62M 1981-1992 - sold to Air Ukraine as CCCP-86133, later UR-86133. Sold to Kokshetau Airline as UN-86506 - wfu 1999 and used for spares at Almaty (Alma Ata), Kazakhstan - since broken up.
SP-LBE Il-62M 1981-1992 - sold to Air Ukraine as CCCP-86134, later UR-86134 - wfu 1999 and broken up at Kiev by 2007.
SP-LBF Il-62M 1983-1992 - sold to Air Ukraine as CCCP-86580, later UR-86580 - wfu 1999 and broken up at Kiev by 2008.
SP-LBG Il-62M 1984-1987 - w/o Warsaw 09May87
SP-LBH Il-62M 1987-1992 - sold to Air Ukraine as CCCP-86135, later UR-86135. Sold to Kokshetau Airline as UN-86505 - wfu 1999 and used for spares at Almaty (Alma Ata), Kazakhstan - since broken up.
SP-LBI Il-62M leased 01Jul87-08Jun88 ex CCCP-86504 Aeroflot. Became RA-86504 with Aeroflot then Dalavia - wfu 02Mar99 as life-expired, reg cancelled 20Mar99 and broken up.
SP-LBR Il-62M leased 27May86-16Apr87 ex YR-IRD Tarom. Returned to Tarom as YR-IRD, then to Trans Asian Airlines. w/o 24Apr98 at Istanbul, when an engine exploded as the aircraft was preparing to take-off and caught fire - all 9 crew and 64 passengers escaped. Seen Istanbul May98, reg cancelled 26May98 - hulk still present Istanbul Aug00 - since broken up.

New horizons - in 1988 I finally retired my trusty Zenith TTL and 300mm lens combo. I had been using various Zenits E, EM and TTL since 1979, but finally made the decision to upgrade. By this time, I wasn't visiting the airports so often, as the Airbus invasion was in full swing! I also had switched to mainly negative/print film since around 1983 as Kodachrome was so expensive, so I don't have all that many slides from the late 80s.

According to my records, on this day I already had loaded a 36 frame roll of Kodak Ektachrome ASA200 film - totally the wrong film for a sunny day! I took just twelve shots from the perimeter fence near the old sewage farm!
