N754PA Pan Am Boeing 747-121 on runway 23 approach to London Heathrow

From a collection of some 500 Boeing slides that I've had scanned from my archives. Hope they will provide some enjoyment and nostalgia from a bygone age.

Memories of Heathrow's original third runway - Runway 23
I was brought up in Southall in West London, just a few miles from Heathrow. Not only that, the house where I lived was right under the flight path of the cross-wind runway 23.

Pan Am Boeing 747-121 N754PA 'Clipper Ocean Rover' is seen over the outer marker on flight PA120 - on final approach to runway 23 at London Heathrow. A rare glimpse of blue sky, as the typical weather when they were operating the cross-wind runway was a flat grey sky and very low cloud - sometimes the aircraft passed over my house completely hidden in the cloud :)

Whenever we had a nice stormy south-westerly wind, you would start to hear the familiar sound of approaching aircraft. As we were around 4 miles out, aircraft would call out over the outer-marker just as they flew over the house - I have some interesting recordings which combine the aircraft going over with the pilot calling on the radio.

N754PA 'Clipper Ocean Rover' c/n 19658 - Boeing 747-121 was an early-build 747 [Line no. 47] - delivered new to Pan Am in May 1970. Pan Am was the launch customer for the 'Jumbo Jet'.

Pan Am Flight 830 - was a flight from Narita International Airport in Tokyo, Japan to Honolulu International Airport in Hawaii. On August 11, 1982, the Boeing 747-121 serving the flight, nicknamed "Clipper Ocean Rover", was en route to Hawaii when the airplane was damaged by a bomb that had been placed on board. Despite the damage to the aircraft, Captain James E. "Skipper" O'Halloran III, of Spokane, Washington, was able to land in Honolulu safely. One person was killed while 284 survived. 16 of them were wounded.
The aircraft was later put back in service by Pan American World Airways and remained in operation for various carriers until the early 1990s. It was scrapped in 2005. See: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pan_Am_Flight_830

After Pan Am sold the aircraft in 1986, it was converted to a freighter and operated with Cargolux as LX-FCV. After various leases, it was sold to Corsair International in Jun 1991 as F-GIMJ. Withdrawn in Jul 1995 and later scrapped.

Taken with a Soviet made Zenith TTL camera and 300mm lens. From an original slide, scanned with minimal restoration.
