Man & Machine - a study of scale. Avianca Columbia Boeing 747-124 HK-2000 seen engine testing on a visit to Pan Am maintenance at London Heathrow - a rare visitor

From a collection of some 500 Boeing slides that I've had scanned from my archives. Hope they will provide some enjoyment and nostalgia from a bygone age.

Avianca Columbia's original Boeing 747 HK-2000 making a very rare visit to London Heathrow. As far as I can remember, I just fell upon this amazing sight on a random tour of the perimeter area of Heathrow. The aircraft had been undergoing emergency maintenance in the Pan Am hangar, most likely an engine swop. Spot the engineer amongst the wheels! My logbook records the flight number was AV2000, so I must have picked this up on the airband radio whilst the aircraft was undergoing ground tests. According to my notes, I then drove up to RAF Mildenhall via Stansted!

HK-2000 'El Dorado' c/n 19734 [line no.58] Boeing 747-124 - built in 1970 and one of the first 747s to roll off the Boeing production line. The aircraft was delivered new to Continental Airlines as N26862 in July 1970 and flew with the airline for just five years before returning to Boeing. Leased to Avianca Columbia, the aircraft flew the Atlantic mainly I believe between Bogota, Paris and Madrid, but never to London! The aircraft was with Avianca from 1976 until 1983, when it was returned to Boeing again as N747BA. After a couple of short-term leases to Air Algerie and SAS as N747BA, the aircraft was sold again, this ime to Tower Air as N602FF - flying with them from 1984 until retirement in 1998. The aircraft languished in storage for two or three years, and was finally broken up in 2001.
