Snoozing Stilt

            The Black-Winged Stilt is called a "stilt" for a reason: its long pink legs resemble wooden stilts.  As seen here, the bird can sleep standing on just one leg with its beak tucked in its feathers. The photograph was taken in the wet shallow marshlands of San Francisco Bay called Baylands Nature Preserve. The preserve is maintained by the City of Palo Alto, and is one of the largest tracts of undisturbed marshland remaining in the San Francisco Bay region.

These Black-necked Stilts are among the most stately of the shorebirds at the Preserve. With their long rose-pink legs, a long thin black bill, and elegant black-and-white plumage, they are unmistakable. They move deliberately when foraging, walking slowly through wetlands in search of tiny aquatic prey.
