Brazilian Giant Rhubarb (Gunnera manicata)

            Gunnera manicata, known as Brazilian giant-rhubarb, is a species of flowering plant in the Gunneraceae family from Brazil.  The leaves grow to an impressive size in diameters well in excess of 4 ft.  They turn a spectacular shade of red in the Fall.

Despite its common name, the plant is not closely related to rhubarb and it's thought to be around 150 million years old. It was named after a Norwegian bishop and botanist Johan Ernst Gunnerus (1718-1773).  Gunnerus was bishop of the Diocese of Nidaros from 1758 until his death and also a professor of theology at the University of Copenhagen.
